Gaetano Donizetti: Don Pasquale
Enzo Dara (Don Pasquale), Luciana Serra (Norina), Aldo Bertolo (Ernesto), Alessandro Corbelli (Dottor Malatesta), Guido Pasella (Notary), Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Regio di Torino, Bruno Campanella (Conductor)
Recording: Teatro Regio di Torino (February 1988) – 115’ 37
United Classics # 8713545230048 – Booklet in English (no libretto)

Despite United Classics’ Don Pasquale being mildly absent of the wonders in current sound technology, this live recording still has marvelous interpretation. Bari-born Bruno Campanella, well-established champion within the bel canto genre, leads the orchestra with unrelenting, clear dictation that provides a firm foundation for the lead singers. This rendition of Donizetti’s classic opera buffa beams with bounce, beauty and charm.

Vocal richness abounds. Enzo Dara’s Don Pasquale is pronounced and polished while Dottore Malatesta, performed by Alessandro Corbelli, possesses a radiant baritone edging. Luciana Serra sings effortlessly in the role of Norina with a bit of soprano prickliness. As Norina’s heartthrob, Ernesto, we find Aldo Bertolo whose voice is akin to a sharper-toned version of Juan Diego Floréz.

Nostalgia brings with it greatness. In this case, we have the two well supported in this Don Pasquale collection.
